Tamil Nadu’s revenue from TASMAC through excise duty and Value Added Tax (VAT) rose significantly to ₹48,344 crore in 2024–25, compared to ₹45,855.70 crore in 2023–24, marking a growth of ₹2,483.30 crore, according to the policy note tabled in the State Assembly on Tuesday by Electricity, Prohibition and Excise Minister V. Senthil Balaji.
The revenue includes ₹37,323 crore from VAT and ₹11,020 crore from excise duty. Officials attributed this increase to the upward revision in liquor prices and higher excise duties implemented last year. The policy note mentioned that the 2024–25 figures are subject to reconciliation.
Historical comparisons show consistent revenue growth:
- 2021–22: ₹36,050.65 crore
- 2022–23: ₹44,121 crore
- 2023–24: ₹45,855.70 crore
End-to-End Digitization of TASMAC
Balaji also informed the Assembly that full end-to-end computerization of TASMAC operations has been successfully implemented across 28 districts in Tamil Nadu.
“This system enables real-time monitoring of operations from production to distribution, and is fully integrated with the department’s control centers,” he said.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to Chief Minister M. K. Stalin’s vision of making Tamil Nadu drug trafficking-free, with multiple enforcement and monitoring measures underway.
Renewable Energy and Power Generation Targets
On the energy front, the minister announced that the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) aims to generate 50% of its electricity from renewable and internal sources by 2030. To meet this target, several major power projects are being accelerated:
- Udangudi Thermal Power Station Stage-I (2×660 MW):
- 91% completed
- First unit (660 MW) to go operational in July 2025
- Second unit to follow in October 2025
- Ennore SEZ Supercritical Thermal Power Project (2×660 MW):
- 62% completed
- Expected commissioning by March 2026
The state also plans to set up new thermal projects totaling 5,700 MW, with 800 MW already generating power.
“With rapid development of thermal and pumped storage projects, Tamil Nadu is on track to achieve its long-term sustainable energy goals,” Balaji concluded.
