Chennai, Tamil Nadu – In a major step toward boosting electric mobility, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) is set to float a tender to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the state. According to Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji, 100 locations along key highways have been identified to establish modern EV charging infrastructure.

The move aligns with the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy 2019, which mandates the setup of EV charging stations every 25 kilometers on highways and within 3 km of substations. The initiative is a crucial part of Tamil Nadu’s strategy to encourage cleaner transport and reduce carbon emissions.

Key Highlights:

  • 256 charging stations have been approved by the Union Power Ministry, out of which 151 are already functional.
  • Functional stations include both private sector operators and public sector entities like the Chennai Corporation.
  • TANGEDCO, the nodal agency, will ensure that all upcoming charging stations have essential amenities including:
    • Parking bays
    • Waiting lounges
    • Drinking water dispensers
    • Fire and safety infrastructure
    • Public restrooms
  • The detailed project report (DPR) has been submitted and tendering will begin upon state government approval.

This project is expected to enhance EV adoption across Tamil Nadu by making charging stations more accessible, especially in long-distance highway corridors.
