In a major boost to Tamil Nadu’s farming community, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday launched a ₹3,025 crore scheme to provide one lakh free electricity connections for agricultural purposes during the current financial year.

At an official event, the Chief Minister personally handed over the order letters to 10 farmers, symbolically kicking off the mass implementation of the scheme.

“No other government in the country moves this swiftly to fulfill its promises,” said CM Stalin, praising Electricity Minister V. Senthil Balaji for his proactive leadership in launching the scheme ahead of schedule.

DMK’s Pro-Farmer Record

Highlighting the DMK’s legacy in supporting farmers, Stalin said:

  • Between 2006 and 2011, 2.09 lakh power connections were provided under the DMK regime.
  • In contrast, the AIADMK government gave only 2.10 lakh connections over 10 years.
  • “Now, we’re giving 1 lakh connections in just four months,” he declared.

The CM also recalled several past DMK initiatives:

  • ₹7,000 crore in farmer loans waived
  • 1.50 lakh landless farmers received 1.89 lakh acres of free land
  • Free electricity for agriculture, a signature scheme of former CM M. Karunanidhi

Power Sector Recovery and Solar Vision

Stalin accused the previous AIADMK regime of mismanaging TNEB, leading to a debt of ₹1.59 lakh crore, with ₹16,000 crore paid annually in interest. He cited:

  • Irregularities in coal stock management
  • Costly long-term power purchase agreements
  • Minimal addition (only 53 MW) to Tamil Nadu’s power generation capacity over a decade

In contrast, Stalin announced:

“We have set an ambitious goal to add 17,980 MW of power capacity in the next 10 years, with solar energy as a top priority.”

This scheme is not just about free power, but about energizing agriculture, empowering farmers, and reviving Tamil Nadu’s energy infrastructure.
